Day Trip from Portland to the Columbia River Gorge

Just a short drive from Portland, Mount Hood and the Colombia River Gorge offer plenty of outdoor activities depending on the time of year. Biking, Hiking, Kayaking, Rafting, Skiing, Mountaineering, Fishing- you name it.

We went on a whim & started our day fueling up with some biscuits from Pine State Biscuits to prepare for our hike around Multnomah.

We had planned on visiting some wineries in the Willamette but by recommendation of the bartender at Ox, the night before, and the incredible meal, we decided to go for a hike. We would also return to Ox for dinner, on our own ambition.

There are plenty of trails nearby and had stopped at the local tourism office to find which trail would best fit the mood for the day, as well as safety for how we were dressed.

We first visited the Multnomah Falls and walked to the top.

Next we drove to the trail, and parked near the river. As we made our way towards the trail, along the river, we noticed just right there, Salmon spawning, and right in front of us, in the river.

The hike was a fairly steady incline, not too difficult, but can get a pick soggy in some areas. The dirt and wet rocks can get a bit slippery. We walked and walked and enjoyed some gorgeous scenery.

I even got to take this cool photo hiking.

After our hike, we stopped at a brewery before heading back.

That was when we were able to enjoy our 2nd meal at Ox. With an Argentine influence and perhaps one of the most innovative Wood Fired Grilling Machines I have ever seen, Ox was perfect in every bite.

The waiting area of the restaurant offers a short order of appetizers, and West Coast Oysters to wet your pallet.

The restaurant is always jam packed. We took seats at the ‘bar’ area of the ‘grilling kitchen’ with much delight. We love sitting in these types of areas. Hey, they are pretty much free cooking demonstrations.

Oooo did you see them do that?

Oh- why don’t we try that at home?

Oh and we sure did. Clam Chowder with Smoked Bone Marrow? Oh yeah.
